The Corporations

The goverment no longer is concerned about Monopoly in a field. Now it is virtually endorsed by the LAW. Corporations seemed to constantly reach a level of power where the government had to control them and force them to split or scale back. Instead corporations within a field started working together, trading information as needed, specialising in their sub-section. Instead of one company dominating a field a huge conglomeration of companies worked in concert to dominate it. Internal competition exists but as they are so intertwined it tends to be covert and limited to the occasional hacking into an allies network.

Corporations in effect became huge mega-corporate alliances.

As always the corporations are driven by greed for money to extend their control but the LAW keeps a quite tight rein to make sure humanity and the biosphere benefit. Corporations acting in an ecologically unfriendly or wasteful manner is virtually unheard of. The LAW is their main client and cannot afford to be displeased in any way.
Individual happiness and freedom is also a high priority for the corporations. Cheap nanotech production means no-one really needs to work so corporations need happy employees, besides a happy employee is far more productive, and no-one wants someone to go postal with a railgun.

Many mega-corporations have become major supporters of a certain evolutionary doctrine which is often the core of their conflicts. The best example of this is the Meditech and Cyberware corps.
